Monday doesn’t have to be a day filled with dread. Do you start dreading Monday on Sunday night? Are you picturing all the things that can go wrong before you even go to bed? Do you wake up with a sense of dread? You are not alone.
I recently read Thou Shall Prosper by Rabbi Daniel Lapin. This book is so much more than just how to make money. It’s really about how to prosper as a person. In one part of the book, he is talking about heart attacks caused by stress. Did you know that the highest rate of heart attacks in the United States occurs at 9 am on Monday? He theorizes that the human body needs time to adjust to change. When we change too quickly, it sends the body into shock, much like throwing a bucket of ice water over your head.
You don’t have to dread Monday. Here are some tips to reduce your stress.
Plan your week on Sunday. Set aside some time on Sunday, it really doesn’t matter what time you do it. During that planning time, sit down with your calendar and look at what all needs to be done. Write your to-do list for the week and then add it to your calendar. Make sure you put a day and time when it will get done. This includes any meals you are responsible for.
Lay out your clothing and things you need on Sunday night. This will reduce the Monday morning craziness of searching for lost shoes or misplaced lipstick. Even make your lunch for the next day. Knowing where everything is allows you find it easily and helps you to sleep well knowing that you will be ready.
Wake up 20 minutes earlier to allow 20 minutes of quiet in the morning. This does not include your morning commute. Now, if you are like me, you are all ready groaning. I know I treasure every minute of sleep I can get. If you need more sleep, go to bed earlier. According to Rabbi Lapin, this 20 minutes of quite time or meditation or prayer, allows your body, mind and spirit to adjust to Monday. You’ve just come through the weekend and you need time to go slowly into Monday.
