Promise me

I love this quote, Promise me you’ll always remember: you’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. It was said by Christopher Robin to the polly polly, lovable Winnie the Pooh. Although it may have been just words in a children’s book, the words could never be truer. We all find out how much we can truly endure when we have no choice but to endure.

From 2002 through 2012 was a very long decade for me. We moved to a new state, watched my father be consumed by prostate cancer, my husband and I both had to have major surgeries within six months of each other, my whole family was involved in a horrible car accident that left my middle son with a skull fracture and brain damage, watched helplessly as my daughter struggled with Severe Anxiety Disorder, declared bankruptcy and started over. It was a tough ten years.

In spite of the difficult times, we made it through. About five years into this decade, I learned, or rather reminded myself, that I already had the answers to not only making it through these rough times, but how to actually thrive in spite of them.

You see, I had been an educator for over 20 years at this point. I had taught preschoolers how to regain control when they felt out of control. I had worked with couples to improve their marriages and be confident parents. I had encouraged women to grow closer to God. I had taught a college course designed to lower stress in an effort to prevent addictive behaviors. All of these classes had on thing in common: when we are stressed, we are not as effective and it can actually lead to mental and physical deterioration.

From the ashes of that decade came a program I developed called Just Breathe. I took over 20 years of experience, research and teaching people to lower their stress levels and created a simple 10 step program to help anyone lower their stress level and create a life of worth. However, being in a constant state of stress is detrimental. It can lead to poor decision making and health problems. It can cause stress in relationships. It can lead to feeling out of control of your life.

First of all, I want to encourage you to share your stories of victory. When we share those stories, two things happen. You remind yourself of just how strong and brave you can be. You encourage others to be brave and strong as well. Both parties benefit.

Second, begin to control the only thing you can control in your life, yourself. Once you acknowledge that you are truly in control of your decisions and emotions, you take away the power of others to control you. Your anger melts away and your pride in who you are rises. This one truth is so completely freeing. I love the Eleanor Rosevelt quote, No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. It’s so true!!!

Third, take care of you. When my children were little, my life consisted of diapers, cleaning and focus on them. I got lost in all the busyness. My wise mom reminded me that, “if you don’t take care of yourself, how can you possibly care for others?” You need daily times of self care and don’t feel one ounce of guilt!
